Rooms with a view

Everyone, whether launching a career or changing jobs in middle age, relocating or suffering family break-up, is likely to rent at some point in their lives. The private rental market can offer short and long-term refuge to groups including immigrants, asylum seekers, students or people struggling in low-paid jobs. This diversity of supply is testimony to both the complexity and versatility of the sector.

The government says this complexity makes it difficult to change the perception that renting is a poor substitute for owner occupation. The Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) believes it cannot develop a quality rental sector without a better understanding of how the rental market operates. More>>
